RICHARD Bacon has opened up about the shocking moment doctors told him he would die if he wasn’t put into a medically induced coma.
The TV star is now having therapy to help him try and overcome the “psychological scars” of being under for 11 days after contracting a bug that nearly killed him.
Richard was admitted to Lewisham Hospital after walking in off the street and complaining of breathlessness.
He was put into a coma and told he could have died if doctors hadn’t intervened so quickly.
In his first interview since falling ill, Richard told BBC Radio 5 Live listeners: “The consultant walked in and said, ‘it’s much worse, I’ve looked at the x-ray, it’s horrible.
“If I don’t put you in a coma for a least a week, you’re going to die. It was the most shocking moment of my life.”
Speaking about his time in hospital, Richard added: “I nearly died the first two nights, I didn’t know at the time.
“The hospital thought I would die the first night and the second night. My blood oxgen levels went to 70 per cent, if you get less than that you get brain damage and die. The infection was winning. They kept saying to Rebecca, ‘he is very ill’.
“I had 250 injections.”
After a week, doctors tried to bring Richard back around but in his confused state he lashed out at doctors and nurses.
He was restrained and they put him back under for his own safety.
Richard added: “Rebeca had to put kids to bed so I woke up surrounded by strangers. I was kicking off to point they had to restrain me, was confused and frightened.
“In the end they put me back under and brought me back out two days later.”
After recovering in hospital, Richard was allowed to go home to his family but it’s not been easy.
He explained: “As the therapist explained, I’m still in the thick of it. I can’t eat properly, I don’t sleep properly.
“The infection is completely gone but the psychological scars need dealing with.”
Richard has used the experience to make positive changes in his life however and has now decided to go teetotal.
Although he admitted alcohol did not cause the bug, he said he wanted to have something positive come out of the situation.
He said: “I’ve always drunk too much, drunk too quickly, giving up drinking altogether forever.
“I need some positive change out of this otherwise it’s a complete waste of time.”
