The plane is understood to have suffered a technical glitch in the air and engineers were seen on the runway fixing the problem.

Fire crews are also thought to have met the plane.

Incoming flights were temporarily diverted as the Airbus A320 plane was inspected.

The Mail Online reports that four flights were sent to Birmingham, two to Stansted and two to Luton.

A spokesman for Gatwick said the runway closed shortly after midnight and its standby was put into action.

Flights are understood to be operating as normal in the meantime.

Passengers had taken to Twitter to report that their flights had been diverted to various airports across the country.
